The New Orleans Police Department has arrested a man accused of crashing his car into a staple retail store on Canal Street.

A video showed the car crash into the front of Rubenstein's on Canal Street around 1:26 a.m. on May 31.

NOPD said Jamel Sharp of Slidell was arrested in connection with the crash.

Police say Sharp called police saying that his car had been stolen.

Sharp's car was later found crashed into the Rubenstein's storefront.

According to NOPD, it was later determined that Sharp was driving the car at the time it crashed.

He was arrested and faces charges of filing a false police report, hit-and-run driving, and reckless operation of a vehicle.

Sharp turned himself in on Monday to police and was booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center.

Anyone with additional information on the crash is asked to call NOPD at 504-658-6080.
